PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The University of Louisville field hockey team earned the 2007-08 BIG EAST Conference Team Academic Excellence Award as announced by the league office Monday. The conference honored the 23 teams that have been recognized with the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
The 2007 Cardinal field hockey team continued its tradition of strong academic performance, posting a 3.45 team GPA in 2007-08. For the past three years, they have also won U of L Highest Team GPA Award. In 2007, they were also among the top teams in the nation with a 3.0 or higher team GPA after leading the nation in 2005 and 2006.
Also among the individual accolades this season, twelve players were named to the 2007 ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad and seventeen were named to the U of L Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each semester during the 2007-08 school year. Seniors Casey Diener and Casey Meizinger shared the 2007-08 U of L Outstanding Senior Award.
"I'm very proud that our team remains consistent in putting academics so high among their priorities," said head coach Pam Bustin. "This also helps set the example for future teams to continue to perform well in the classroom as well as on the field. It is an honor to be in a conference that respects academics such as the BIG EAST."
The Cardinals went 14-6 on the season and captured their second-consecutive BIG EAST Conference regular season title after going 5-1 in league play.
